Apple Logic To Withdraw Support For Pro Tools Hardware ?

Tag Key : Apple, Products, Money

There's a rumor Apple (Logic) are to stop support for Avid's Digidesign products (Pro Tools). This is a massive kick in the teeth for Avid who I here are struggling a bit at the moment. Neither rumor surprises me; I cashed in my (digital signal processing) chips a long time ago when Apple brought out the G5. The chips I cashed in were a Digidesign HD 3 (before excel) and a 192 interface. I could see the end for the need of processing power on PCI cards.
I thought I should get as much money for my Digidesign Pro Tools HD system as I could, I already liked the sound of Apogee interfaces so I bought a Rosetta 800 and made do with a G5 dual 1.8. It was a bit sluggish but I knew bigger beasts were 'in the post'. And in the post they were beyond my wildest dreams because I had no idea about the intel chips they were going to load them up with. I have to say also that I thought the Rosetta sounded much better than my 192 I had. Engineers often criticise Apogee stuff saying it sounds a bit sheeny. If they do then I like sheeny!
I hated the way Digidesign's upgrade system worked. I spent a fortune upgrading my Mix system to HD and it seemed only months later HD Exel came out. It's part of the reason I sold my HD system when I did; I wasn't about to fork out all that money AGAIN!
I do feel sorry for all those Logic users now lumbered with a HD rigs but soon will be unable to upgrade Logic. I don't know why Apple are withdrawing support, I know that Avid and Apple have never been the best of friends but this really feels like kicking them when they are down. I wonder how much my Logic using pals will be able to get for their HD rigs now. I've been native for a few years now, I'm running 2 x 2.8 quad intel xeon, a load of ram and I can't even get the beast to break into a sweat. I use an Apogee Ensemble interface now. I swapped my Rosetta 800 for the Ensemble because I wanted the lightpipe i/o when I ran Gigastudio. The stereo sp/diff i/o still comes in handy.
I can see the Mac Pro doesn't break into a sweat because I use islayer's iStat; It's a neat app which lets me know what's going on in my mac; from the temperature of my processors and disk drives to how much processing power I am using and from which processors, handy when you want to see how your individual plugins use your processors. There's even a handy ethernet bandwidth counter! All the stats appear at the top of the screen and look great; there are drop down menus of everything for more detailed statistics.
My advise to any Logic users with a Pro Tools rig is to come and do a Pro Tools course here with George or get shot of those cards and interfaces NOW!

How to Speed My PC Up Easily

Tag Key : Performance, Programs, Windows,

Are you frustrated with your PC's performance lately? If you don't have the money for new hardware, here's a simple tip you can use for instant relief.
Typically, when you bring home a computer from the store, it will have preinstalled software and will be using all the preinstalled operating system settings. For most of these OS's today, that can mean rounded window corners, smooth fonts, transparent windows, mouse shadowing, and much more. These features can significantly slow down machines that have smaller CPUs, smaller amounts of memory (RAM), and an overload of programs.
If you're still wondering "how to speed my PC up easily," then here's how you can adjust or turn off those fancy visuals:
Windows 7/Windows Vista
1.) On either your desktop or from the Start menu, right-click on Computer and click on Properties.
2.) In the lower left corner of the screen that pops up, which contains basic info about your PC, click on Performance Information and Tools (for Vista, just click on Performance).
3.) On the next page, click on Adjust visual effects, which is in the upper left hand corner of the window.
4.) When the Performance Options window pops up, you are presented with a list of options. Selecting "Adjust for best performance" will remove all of the fancy visual effects and significantly increase your PC's general operations. For those wishing to keep some of the cool-looking effects, you can pick and choose what you like with the "Custom" option.
5.) When you're done, click OK.
Windows XP
1.) On either your desktop or from the Start menu, right-click on Computer and click on Properties.
2.) In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
3.) Under Performance, click on Settings. Select "Adjust for best performance" to remove all visual effects or choose "Custom" to compromise between cool effects and performance.
Remember! This is just the tip of the iceberg on how to speed PC up easily. For serious speed increases at the click of a mouse button, go to http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-speed-my-pc-up

When it Takes Forever to Boot Up - How to Speed Up My PC With Little Effort

Tag Key : Speed, PC, Programs, Windows

Do you use every single application that's installed on your machine immediately upon login? If you're the typical user, you open programs on an as-needed basis. It is obvious that the more programs you have open at once, the bigger the impact on your PC performance, and the greater potential for things to start coming to a crawl or even freezing.
A lot of programs, like Adobe Acrobat, Reader, and the Microsoft Office suites, will start their services immediately upon login, which forces you to wait. Of course, that's the last thing you want to do when you first log in to your PC.
When it comes to startup slowness or quickly figuring out how to speed up my PC, a handy tool I like to use is MSCONFIG, which is more formerly known as the System Configuration Utility. This tool has a tab that shows all of the programs that load upon startup. It also gives you the ability to select or deselect programs that you don't want to automatically start. Here's how you open the tool:
Windows 7/Windows Vista
  • Go to Start. In the Search box, type "msconfig" and hit Enter. In the System Configuration Utility window, click on the "Startup" tab. Check or uncheck programs as you see fit.
Windows XP
  • Go to Start. Click on Run... Type in "msconfig" and hit Enter. In the System Configuration Utility window, click on the "Startup" tab. Check or uncheck programs as necessary.
As a general rule, I only uncheck items that start with "C:Program Files..." in the second column. If it has something similar to "C:WINDOWSsystem32..." then it's probably an important system file that needs to run on startup. I would leave those and your firewall and antivirus programs checked.
After you make your changes, you'll have to reboot at some point for your changes to take effect. When you do, you'll notice that the programs you unchecked aren't running at startup and your wait time to start using your PC was significantly decreased. If you have a lot of programs and they don't need to be loaded after logging in, you can save a ton of time using this easy fix!

Computer Programming Basics - Getting Started the Easy Way

A computer program is made up of a chain of instructions a computer has to perform. These instructions may come with other important data that's needed to carry out those instructions. Hence, the process of programming involves the defining of the instructions and the data. For you to come up with data for your computer, you should be familiar with computer programming basics and the datas three fundamental elements:

1. Instructions that need to be carried out.
2. Order in which the instructions are to be carried out.
3. Data needed to do the instructions.

The first stage of computer programming basically involves paper processes. In this phase, you don't even need to work using a computer, however if you use a word processor that will enable you to write your work to a disk file rather than in a piece of paper. You need to do this so you can figure out clearly and more specifically, what you want your computer to perform before you begin to instruct the computer to execute it.

Bear in mind that the computer will follow the instructions exactly as given. It can't say what you want; it can rather do what you want it to do. So before your program comes close to a computer, you need to do several steps which include:

- Defining the problem
Before you instruct the computer what to do, you must first be familiar with it. You need to clearly tell the computer what it needs to accomplish or to generate as the outcome of all the activities it will perform.

- Identifying the solution
If you already know what the computer will produce as an end result, you should take a close look at the information you have, and determine the information that you require. There's also a need for you to define the logical procedures, equations, and other methods you have to utilize so you can manipulate the raw input data into the end result you want to achieve.

- Mapping the solution
This stage in computer programming has to be laid out in proper order. Don't forget that the sequence in which actions are used is as vital as the actions themselves. When organizing the solution into the right order, you will be putting choices into consideration.

When you're done defining the problem as well as designing and mapping the solution, the next thing you need to do is to begin with the task of writing the program code into one or a couple of computer language(s). But before you proceed, you must first decide on the possible languages you need to use as well as the particular computer platform.

Usually, computer languages are optimized for various kinds of tasks. It is, hence, important to select first the language that will best suit the task required. Indeed, learning computer programming basics is the first step a wannabe programmer has to arm himself with, especially if he wants to pursue a career in the said field.

3 Reasons Why I Should Learn How to Speed My PC Up

Regardless of the reason, PC's are part of everyday life. As such, it's important they are well-maintained. Here are 3 good reasons why you should learn how to speed my PC up.

Increased Productivity

When you go to work in the morning, whether it's at an office building or from your own home office, you'll more than likely rely on a computer for all or some of your business processes. If that PC isn't reliable, then business suffers. Things like "blue screens," viruses, malware, and general slowness cause downtime and may possibly prevent you from doing your job. When dollars and time are on the line, it's a good idea to invest in a PC that will keep up with your workflow and maintain it properly.

Better Gaming

As games get better and better these days, they require more and more horsepower. That means better video cards, monitors with higher resolution and refresh rates, faster CPU's, and increased RAM. Of course, none of that new hardware is any good if your computer is still crashing or running slow from viruses or spyware. If you have the tools, a little PC care can greatly enhance your gaming experience. That means less lag, fewer disruptions, and better overall quality of game play.

Fewer Out-of-Pocket Expenses

If you bought a PC with a warranty, you may not realize it needs any fixing until after the warranty expires. Of course, by that time, it's too late to send it in and have it repaired. Does this mean you go out and buy a new computer or new hardware? For some it, it does, and it can be costly. A PC that's two or three years old can still be as good as a brand new one if taken care of properly. A little research and some new software can save you big money and extend the lifetime of your PC.

Whether you're a gamer, a casual Internet surfer, or just work in a business that relies on computers, it pays big dividends to take care of your PC. Not only that, but it can potentially improve your general well-being.

Optimize Your Computer and Save Energy

Energy crisis is getting worse and worse in coming days. We all need to change our habits in order to learn new ways to save energy. I was thinking optimizing our computers to use them more sufficiently then normally we do. Following are few tips which will help you save some energy and ultimately reduce your bills J

Why optimize my computer:

90% of desktop computers are not optimized for energy efficiency. If you optimize your machine, according to Intel, it can save you about 400-kilowatt hours annually.

Optimizing your computer:

Click on "start" menu. Then click on "settings" and then "control panel."

Double click on "power management", under where it says "power schemes," choose "always on" from the drop-down list. Below the "settings for always on power scheme" tab, look for two drop-down lists, labeled "turn off monitor" and "turn off hard disks," respectively.

There are options to select from minutes to hours. set this for 2 minutes or try 15 minutes. Select any according to your needs and requirements.

If you are on Macs. It's more easier to implement these settings. Just go to the Apple pull-down menu, select "system preferences" and then "energy saver." It's all in there.

The new LCD monitors are good for about 100 Kwh per year of electricity savings. Ok, Try to upgrade as you need to replace the old one.

Computer's screen saver programs do not save energy. Unless the screen or backlight on a computer actually turns off, a screen saver uses as much power as word processing. Also, don't forget, you can save additional energy by adjusting your computer's sleep mode to turn on more frequently.

Use the necessary programs only:

Each program is consuming resources from the CPU and the CPU itself consumes energy, for this reason it is advisable to open the programs we are using. Even we can close those programs that are in the systray and run in the background.

By reducing the amount of RAM memory processes and also prevent Windows use virtual memory on your hard disk, which will help us save energy, because the disc has a high consumption

Using Laptops instead of Desktops:

Laptops are generally more environmental friendly than their "big brothers". So if you are planning on getting a new computer you should consider a laptop instead of a desktop computer.

A desktop computer usually uses around 130 watts while a laptop only uses around 15 watts, and sometimes that is with the same tech specs. There are other good features which make them a good choice over desktops like laptops are smaller and use less packaging, meaning less transport and storage space needed. Laptops are available to use during your travel while desktops are waiting back at home.

Remember:

* Remember that the DVD drive, wireless and screen brightness use the most power. Limit their use and you will save a little more power.

* To reduce energy consumption and maximize savings even further, put your laptop's AC adaptor on a power strip that can be turned off when you're not recharging. Otherwise the adaptor will continuously draw power.

* When not using your laptop for a few minutes or put it in Stand By Sleep, and when not have to wear a longer place your laptop in hibernate mode.

* Decrease the consumption of the LCD monitor to adjust the brightness of just what is needed. While the monitor is brighter consume more power.

There is also a relationship between consumption and colors, darker colors use less. If we do not use the entire screen and our desktop is in sight, it is advisable to use a screen or a dark background color black.

With these tips you can save energy. Reducing consumption of your computer/laptop will save you money and enhance the life of your equipment.

The History of Magnet

Do you know The history of magnet ? You can read this aricle. Magnets are magical objects having magnetic fields that can hold things together. The magnetic fields attract metallic bits and pieces like clips, pins, hair and other similar objects.

It is believed that ancient Greeks are the strongest competitors who discovered magnets. They were the first who observed lodestone attracted iron bits. Another version says that they discovered magnetites in Turkey. Thales who lived in Greece is known as the first human who studied magnets. He studied the nature of magnets why they attracted each other.

On the contrary, Chinese also used magnetic stones at that time and historians believe that they used it for making compass. Magnets also appeared in an ancient place in Macedonia called Magnesia. Even till this day, the Chinese use magnets for healing which they call magnetic therapy. The Romans used to catch electric eels and they used it to cure arthritis and gout. During the middle ages, the alchemists claimed that they used magnets for curing sadness, baldness and arthritis.

A Swedish scientist named Swedenborg studied the differences between a magnetic object and a non magnetic one in 1734. Magnetite was the first magnetic substance that was ever known. A French, named Louis Neel had challenged Swedenborg and came up with a theory on ferromagnestism. Magnets have five types namely bar, lodestone, horse, ring and button. They are classified according to their different shapes and sizes. Others are made of iron and rock.

Magnets have made our lives easy and comfortable.. They are used in making microphones, electric motors, TV sets, computer monitors, speakers and much more. Magnetic compasses are also used in ships to keep them on right track. Jewelry and tools also have magnets. A television set has magnetic chips in their CRTs. A magnetic field is formed and with an electronic process images can be seen on the screen. Computer discs are also coated with iron which creates magnetic field and allows the disc to store data. In the field of transportation, magnets are used in bullet train tracks. ATM card or credit cards also have magnetic strip. Magnets are indeed crucial in our lives today.

Choose The Best Browser For Your Internet Connection

What browser do you use for your internet connection ? Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Mozila Firefox ? If you not yet choosen the best browser, you can read the text below. This posting came from enzinearticles.com.

It all started with Nexus in 1991, the first worldwide web interface. That year marked the beginning of the browser war. Just type in 'list of browsers' in Google and you can find at least 50 web browsers to choose from. This 'storm' of applications just to access the 'cloud' is mind boggling but one doesn't have to find out which three browsers fight for the throne every month or so with there newer versions, add-ons, better UIs and what not. You can just keep switching from one to the other every week just for the fun of it.

Google's Chrome has finally beaten Apple's hyped up Safari which was, honestly, good for nothing. It demanded more memory, wasn't much of a fast browser and the add-ons made the browser more difficult to handle instead of tweaking it up.

There are 3 main aspects through which one can judge, which browser is the one for them; security, privacy and performance. The Big three, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome will be discussed under these factors.

Security

It is a very basic but important issue. You wouldn't want be shopping online without proper security of course. There are two main kinds of threats that need to be attended to by any web browser; Phishing and Malware.

Phishing refers to high - tech security threats referring to websites that trick the users into providing personal, financial and password information. Phishing sites cannot be easily detected as they look the same as the usually trusted websites like banks and mortgage companies.

Malware are a kind of virus that infiltrate computers without the user's consent and can retrieve vital information from it.

The Big 3 have latest security technology for tackling these issues. IE is equipped with 'Phishing Filter' and 'Malware Protection' and Firefox is equipped with their equivalents.

Saving the best for last, Chrome uses 'sandboxing' technology which actually is quite genius. The term 'sandbox' is used by developers which means running operations in isolation. Chrome uses this technique by limiting access of the browser operations within, meaning nothing can infiltrate the user's computer as the browser treats itself in a completely isolated environment.

Privacy

This one is a tie. 'InPrivate' for IE, 'Private' for Firefox and 'Incognito' for Chrome let you use the browser without saving anything on the hard drive let it be passwords, history, cookies or cache. The only difference here is the fancy names they use. These features can be activated quite easily and can be found often under the 'Tools' menu.

Performance

The humorous 'legendary' claims made by Microsoft in their infamous 'browser comparison chart' [can be found on their website] comparing the Big 3 are quite bogus but one has to admit what they said in the performance section, 'knowing the top speed of a car doesn't tell you how fast you can drive in rush hour', is sadly true. The Big 3 are almost the same in performance if u test them through YouTube and time them until they load a video.

So, the answer to the question, 'which browser is the best?' depends on you! If you like the user interface to be customized to your favorite rock band or your dream car, Chrome is the one for you, or if you like seeing the boring 'E' icon in blue all the time, go for IE. For tech savvies who want everything to be the way they want it to be, the Firefox add-ons do it for them.

The Apple iPad Tablet - Will it Be a Game Changer?

Do you have Apple ? This is important information about Apple. This information I had taken from enzine article. Apple just announced that their long awaited iPad Tablet will be available to the public on April 3rd, with "pre-order" starting in one week. Will the iPad Tablet command the kind of lines and packing out for a couple of days on line, that the iPhone did?

Probably not, but the Apple is trying to use it to boomerang an existing niche market, the small tablet PC market, into competition with the laptop and note book market, to some extent. Apples expects there will be a downward migration from laptop users into iPad users, there buy increasing the size of the tablet market, and providing Apple with a lower barrier to entry.

There has been so much hype over this and rightly so. Pat of Apple's brilliance is the way it promotes and markets their products. Surely the style and functionality of the products are the cutting edge into the market, but apple knows how to create a buzz. Notice all those ads for iPad giveaways. They really aren't scams.

Sure you may have to subscribe to a couple of magazines and take a few surveys, but in the end you'll get your free iPad. This is where Apple is genius. Instead of spending millions on TV ads, they are approaching this launch in other ways. Instead they are employing the strengths and reach of the internet and combined with their own reputation and are getting the "buzz out on the iPad Tablet.

I personally believe it will be a hit, and a big one long term for Apple, who knows maybe the original version iPad will become collectors items, but I doubt it, at least not to the Apple faithful out there. Instead, if the iPad succeeds in gaining market share, but also growing the tablet pc market, then it will be far ahead of any competitors, just as the iPhone is today.

Supercomputer challenges, technologies

A supercomputer generates large amounts of heat and must be cooled. Cooling most supercomputers is a major HVAC problem. Information cannot move faster than the speed of light between two parts of a supercomputer. For this reason, a supercomputer that is many metres across must have latencies between its components measured at least in the tens of nanoseconds. Seymour Cray's supercomputer designs attempted to keep cable runs as short as possible for this reason, hence the cylindrical shape of his Cray range of computers. In modern supercomputers built of many conventional CPUs running in parallel, latencies of 1–5 microseconds to send a message between CPUs are typical.

Supercomputers consume and produce massive amounts of data in a very short period of time. According to Ken Batcher, "A supercomputer is a device for turning compute-bound problems into I/O-bound problems." Much work on external storage bandwidth is needed to ensure that this information can be transferred quickly and stored/retrieved correctly.

Technologies developed for supercomputers include:

  1. Vector processing
  2. Liquid cooling
  3. Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA)
  4. Striped disks (the first instance of what was later called RAID)
  5. Parallel filesystems

Definiton of Supercomputer

What do you think about supercomputer ? Do you know definition about supercomputer ? I have found this definition from www.wikipedia.org. Read the posting below :

A supercomputer is a computer that is at the frontline of current processing capacity, particularly speed of calculation. Supercomputers were introduced in the 1960s and were designed primarily by Seymour Cray at Control Data Corporation (CDC), which led the market into the 1970s until Cray left to form his own company, Cray Research. He then took over the supercomputer market with his new designs, holding the top spot in supercomputing for five years (1985–1990). In the 1980s a large number of smaller competitors entered the market, in parallel to the creation of the minicomputer market a decade earlier, but many of these disappeared in the mid-1990s "supercomputer market crash".

Today, supercomputers are typically one-of-a-kind custom designs produced by "traditional" companies such as Cray, IBM and Hewlett-Packard, who had purchased many of the 1980s companies to gain their experience. As of July 2009[update], the Cray Jaguar is the fastest supercomputer in the world.

The term supercomputer itself is rather fluid, and today's supercomputer tends to become tomorrow's ordinary computer. CDC's early machines were simply very fast scalar processors, some ten times the speed of the fastest machines offered by other companies. In the 1970s most supercomputers were dedicated to running a vector processor, and many of the newer players developed their own such processors at a lower price to enter the market. The early and mid-1980s saw machines with a modest number of vector processors working in parallel to become the standard. Typical numbers of processors were in the range of four to sixteen. In the later 1980s and 1990s, attention turned from vector processors to massive parallel processing systems with thousands of "ordinary" CPUs, some being off the shelf units and others being custom designs. Today, parallel designs are based on "off the shelf" server-class microprocessors, such as the PowerPC, Opteron, or Xeon, and most modern supercomputers are now highly-tuned computer clusters using commodity processors combined with custom interconnects.

Supercomputers are used for highly calculation-intensive tasks such as problems involving quantum physics, weather forecasting, climate research, molecular modeling (computing the structures and properties of chemical compounds, biological macromolecules, polymers, and crystals), physical simulations (such as simulation of airplanes in wind tunnels, simulation of the detonation of nuclear weapons, and research into nuclear fusion). A particular class of problems, known as Grand Challenge problems, are problems whose full solution requires semi-infinite computing resources.

Relevant here is the distinction between capability computing and capacity computing, as defined by Graham et al. Capability computing is typically thought of as using the maximum computing power to solve a large problem in the shortest amount of time. Often a capability system is able to solve a problem of a size or complexity that no other computer can. Capacity computing in contrast is typically thought of as using efficient cost-effective computing power to solve somewhat large problems or many small problems or to prepare for a run on a capability system. source : www.wikipedia.org

Fishbowl, Free Dekstop Program, Likes Facebook

Good news where new Microsoftt out a new desktop program that is free of artificial Facebook. This application you can download from the internetFishbowl, Microsoft made this application as well as following the introduction of 4 new Silverlight, which can now be downloaded. Fishbowl has ineterface like Facebook, including badges, mini-news feed, and so on, it's just a special present in the Fishbowl desktop. At first appearance, looks like Fishbowl redesigned Facebook, but it is lighter than Facebook. At the top, looks like a regular section on Facebook, there are Home, Profile, Photos, and so on, and on the left side there is a choice that the user wants to enter. By navigating the section, it will be like on the website Asama Facebook.

However, as a desktop client, Fishbowl has added a slightly different features than Facebook. In the photo section will lead to a similar interface iPhoto or Picasa, users can scroll the album and view pictures as usual, zooming, slideshow, or print directly from the Fishbowl. Users can also upload images using photo uploader Fishbowl. As for motifikasi also dealt with the sweet, from the taskbar icon that support for the badges, when someone writes something on the wall the user, send messages or comments on photos. To see the notification, the user can into the program and click the notification icon or right click on the taskbar icon and see jumplist the Fishbowl. In addition, Aero Peek still has a small keypad for easy navigation to the Home, Friends, Profile, or photos in the Fishbowl Facebook.

Fishbowl application also has a mini window that displays the status update on news feeds, can scroll up to 200 status. However, if the Fishbowl in full view mode, then a few pages, especially news feed will appear slow when loaded. Fishbowl (fishbowlclient.com) can be downloaded for free for Windows systems, and require the use of Silverlight.

Types of Random Access Memory

On The posting below, you will read about types of RAM. Learn it, and if you anytime buy a RAM you will choose right.

Modern types of writable RAM generally store a bit of data in either the state of a flip-flop, as in SRAM (static RAM), or as a charge in a capacitor (or transistor gate), as in DRAM (dynamic RAM), EPROM, EEPROM and Flash. Some types have circuitry to detect and/or correct random faults called memory errors in the stored data, using parity bits or error correction codes. RAM of the read-only type, ROM, instead uses a metal mask to permanently enable/disable selected transistors, instead of storing a charge in them.

SRAM and DRAM are volatile, other forms of computer storage, such as disks and magnetic tapes, have been used as persistent storage in traditional computers. Many newer products instead rely on flash memory to maintain data when not in use, such as PDAs or small music players. Certain personal computers, such as many rugged computers and netbooks, have also replaced magnetic disks with flash drives. With flash memory, only the NOR type is capable of true random access, allowing direct code execution, and is therefore often used instead of ROM; the lower cost NAND type is commonly used for bulk storage in memory cards and solid-state drives.

Similar to a microprocessor, a memory chip is an integrated circuit (IC) made of millions of transistors and capacitors. In the most common form of computer memory, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), a transistor and a capacitor are paired to create a memory cell, which represents a single bit of data. The capacitor holds the bit of information — a 0 or a 1 . The transistor acts as a switch that lets the control circuitry on the memory chip read the capacitor or change its state.

Memory hierarchy

Many computer systems have a memory hierarchy consisting of CPU registers, on-die SRAM caches, external caches, DRAM, paging systems, and virtual memory or swap space on a hard drive. This entire pool of memory may be referred to as "RAM" by many developers, even though the various subsystems can have very different access times, violating the original concept behind the random access term in RAM. Even within a hierarchy level such as DRAM, the specific row, column, bank, rank, channel, or interleave organization of the components make the access time variable, although not to the extent that rotating storage media or a tape is variable. The overall goal of using a memory hierarchy is to obtain the higher possible average access performance while minimizing the total cost of the entire memory system (generally, the memory hierarchy follows the access time with the fast CPU registers at the top and the slow hard drive at the bottom).

In many modern personal computers, the RAM comes in an easily upgraded form of modules called memory modules or DRAM modules about the size of a few sticks of chewing gum. These can quickly be replaced should they become damaged or when changing needs demand more storage capacity. As suggested above, smaller amounts of RAM (mostly SRAM) are also integrated in the CPU and other ICs on the motherboard, as well as in hard-drives, CD-ROMs, and several other parts of the computer system.

Swapping

If a computer becomes low on RAM during intensive application cycles, many CPU architectures and operating systems are able to perform an operation known as "swapping". Swapping uses a paging file, an area on a hard drive temporarily used as additional working memory. Constant use of this mechanism is called thrashing and is generally undesirable because it lowers overall system performance, mainly because hard drives are slower than RAM.

Other uses of the "RAM" term

Other physical devices with read–write capability can have "RAM" in their names: for example, DVD-RAM. "Random access" is also the name of an indexing method: hence, disk storage is often called "random access" (Wiki:PowerOfPlainText, Fortran language features#Direct-access files, MBASIC#Files and input/output, Java Platform, Standard Edition#Random access, indexed file) because the reading head can move relatively quickly from one piece of data to another, and does not have to read all the data in between. However the final "M" is crucial: "RAM" (provided there is no additional term as in "DVD-RAM") always refers to a solid-state device.

Often, RAM is a shorthand in on-line conversations for referring to the computer's main working memory.

RAM disks

Software can "partition" a portion of a computer's RAM, allowing it to act as a much faster hard drive that is called a RAM disk. Unless the memory used is non-volatile, a RAM disk loses the stored data when the computer is shut down. However, volatile memory can retain its data when the computer is shut down if it has a separate power source, usually a battery.

Shadow RAM

Sometimes, the contents of a ROM chip are copied to SRAM or DRAM to allow for shorter access times (as ROM may be slower). The ROM chip is then disabled while the initialized memory locations are switched in on the same block of addresses (often write-protected). This process, sometimes called shadowing, is fairly common in both computers and embedded systems.

As a common example, the BIOS in typical personal computers often has an option called “use shadow BIOS” or similar. When enabled, functions relying on data from the BIOS’s ROM will instead use DRAM locations (most can also toggle shadowing of video card ROM or other ROM sections). Depending on the system, this may or may not result in increased performance. On some systems the benefit may be hypothetical because the BIOS is not used after booting in favor of direct hardware access. Of course, somewhat less free memory is available when shadowing is enabled
